Having been a fan of
wrestling his whole life, it was only natural that J.T. became a wrestler
himself. Starting in 2005, after serving in the U.S. Army, graduating
from college and becoming one of the best underground stand-up comedians
working the U.S., he could deny his calling no longer. After attending
a few Independent wrestling shows in the Indianapolis area, J.T. decided
to attend a wrestling "clinic" taught by Austin Aries at
the now dufunct CCW in Terre Haute, IN. Going just to give it a try,
everybody, including J.T., was surprised at how fast he learned. Being
natually gifted, both Aries and CCW owner Colton Cash suggested the
J.T. give wrestling a go.
From there he decided to look at the
wrestling scene in Indianapolis, which is known as the crossroads
of the U.S. and where all the top national and independant stars work
at some point in their career. It was there that Indiana legend "Diamond"
Dan Garza and J.T. crossed paths. Garza invited J.T. out to a training
session and was impressed by his ability, having only one training
session under his belt. Garza and J.T. bonded immediately, taking
J.T. as a student inside the ring and outside. Breaking J.T. into
the business by taking him to all of the Indiana shows as well as
the WWE training ground OVW, all the while teaching J.T. the respect
for the business that is needed for any wrestler to survive.
Personal circumstances caused J.T. to
move back home to Chicago, IL, there he began training at Windy City
Pro Wrestling. Here, J.T. had to call upon all the training that Garza
had given him. This was no longer the happy go lucky rookie of the
prior year. This was a man with a huge chip residing on his shoulder,
tired of being overworked, overlooked, and underappreciated and tired
of seeing other African Americans being made to dance around and speak
"ebonics" for the sake of comic relief. J.T. vowed to be
the opposite of any stereotype and take on the "system",
resulting in a movement that caused half the lockerroom to leave the
company and start a brand new organization. To this day this a story
well known throughout out Chicago.
Ending that experience, J.T. decided
it would be worth the drive to return to his wrestling home and father
figure, "Diamond" Dan Garza. Garza and J.T., both being
minorities, felt it was important the new J.T. not only made a statement
about the current state of minorities in wrestling but also to show
J.T.'s natural star power. Believing that he is as good as anyone
in the ring and being of African decent, J.T. christened the name
"Blackstar." Dedicating himself to earning or beating the
respect out of anyone in the ring while entertaining the masses.
J.T. Blackstar is both loved and hated
by fans. Cheered for his in ring work and what he believes, hated
for his win "by any means necessary" attitude. Women love
him, men want to be him or simply beat him. Blackstar is never satisfied
until everybody in the audience responds, good or bad because in his
words "It's Haaaaarrrrd work being this good!"
